Travel Smart Rewards is a research study conducted by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore (LTA). The purpose of the Study is to test and refine the effectiveness of an incentive mechanism aimed at encouraging off-peak commuting and building loyalty towards (including utilisation of) the public transit system.

By participating in the Study, you agree to:

(a) be bound by the following Terms and Conditions (including the Privacy Policy), as may from time to time be updated by LTA and published on this website; and

(b) participate in the Study in good faith and in an honest manner, with a view towards shifting your travel patterns accordingly.

1. Study Period

1.1 The initial 18-month duration of the study, which commenced on 10 July, 2012 was extended till 9 Aug, 2016 ("Study Period").

1.2 The LTA reserve the right at its sole discretion to shorten or extend the duration of the Study Period without any prior notification to you or the public and without incurring any liability.

2. Eligibility for the Study

2.1 Any natural person with a valid Adult CEPAS Compliant Card, Workfare Transport concession card, Persons with Disabilities concession card, Senior Citizen concession card and University or Polytechnic or ITE concession card is eligible to apply to join the Study. Selection of Participants shall be on the basis of the extent to which applicants' historical commuting data adheres to underlying research criteria.

2.2 The LTA shall have the sole discretion and right to make the selection of Participants for this Study and such decision shall be final. LTA shall not be obliged to t provide any reasons for its decision. Applicants selected for the Study will be informed by e-mail.

2.3 You undertake to provide complete, true and accurate information when applying to participate in this Study, and to promptly update the same as required to ensure that it remains complete, true and accurate throughout the Study Period. Failure to do so, as well as any breach of these Terms and Conditions by you, may result in your disqualification from the Study. You may also be required to return all rewards and incentives earned through the Study.

3. Application by CEPAS cardholders

3.1 The period of application shall be from 1 August, 2012, until the completion of the Study.

3.2 The details required for the application are as follows:

All compulsory fields must be completed in full. Incorrect or incomplete fields will render the application invalid.

3.3 The registered email address will also act as the account login for the Participant. An ID number of the CEPAS card will be associated with only one email address or web account at any given time. You shall only register the CEPAS card that belongs to you and will be used by you during the Study Period.

3.4 There shall be only one mode of registration through on-line registration via www.travelsmartrewards.sg. Instructions will be available on the web page.

3.5 You are not allowed to register more than one CEPAS card under your account. In the event of the loss or damage of your CEPAS card, you are required to inform the LTA promptly by editing the settings on your account on www.travelsmartrewards.sg or sending an email to team@travelsmartrewards.sg, before registering a second CEPAS card under your account.

3.6 You are not allowed to register more than one account.

3.7 Only a one-time registration is required for each CEPAS compliant card throughout the Study Period.

4. Points, Redemption and Payment

4.1 Participants earn points proportional to the distance they travel on public transit, with extra points awarded for decongesting trips. These points are redeemable for monetary rewards on an online portal. There are two ways that Participants can use their points to redeem the monetary rewards:

a) Random redemption. In this method, Participants will redeem their points through a mechanism that is essentially an Instant Dip. That is, the random redemption algorithm shall determine whether the points a participant is attempting to redeem result in a monetary payout. This determination is instantaneous.

b) Deterministic redemption. In this method, Participants trade their points for a fixed, pre-determined amount of money.

4.2 Participants who have made a successful redemption are notified instantly on their user account. In addition, an email will be sent to them.

4.3 The monetary rewards will be paid to the Participant through the CEPAS card once a month and credited to the participant's CEPAS card at any Transit Link Ticket Office (TO) or any Add-Value machine (AVM).

4.4 The LTA may at its sole and absolute discretion, and at any time without prior notice, decide or change the quantum of the monetary rewards. Experimentation in this study is to be expected, hence the incentives offered during these experiments may vary from time to time. This is to allow us to better understand the effect of incentives in such experiments.

4.5 The monetary rewards will only be paid to the Participant's registered CEPAS card or bank account. In the event that the Participant's CEPAS card is lost or damaged, the monetary rewards will not be paid to another CEPAS card (i.e. different from the one registered by the Participant earlier) and it will also not be paid to the Participant in cash.

4.6 The Participant shall not lend or allow any other person to use his or her registered CEPAS card.

4.7 It shall be a condition for collection of the $1,500 lucky draw prize that the lucky draw winner participate in interviews and other promotional activities for the Study and/or the Singapore public transit system and allow LTA to use (include publish) these materials at LTA’s sole discretion.

5. Claim Period

5.1 If the Participant has not registered details of his or her Singapore bank account, the monetary rewards must be claimed by Participants at any Transit Link Ticket Office (TO or by tapping the registered CEPAS card at any Add-Value machine (AVM), within three months after being notified of the money being credited in their Travel Smart Rewards account ("Claim Period").

5.2 All monetary rewards not claimed during the Claim Period shall be automatically forfeited and donated to a charity chosen at the discretion of the LTA and no claims whatsoever (such as but not limited to claims for payment or compensation) shall be entertained.

6. General

6.1 It is your sole responsibility to provide the LTA (including its agent) current, complete, truthful and accurate information and to keep the information that you provide for the Study up-to-date. You undertake to bear full responsibility for any problems, consequences or liability that may arise whether directly or indirectly as a result of your failure to provide accurate, truthful, up-to-date or complete information.

6.2 The LTA's decision(s) on all matters relating to the Study shall be undisputed, final and binding. The LTA (including its agent) shall not be obliged to enter into any correspondence with you or any other party on any matter relating to the Study.

6.3 The LTA (including its agent) reserves the right at any time to remove any Participant from the Study or restrict or terminate his or her access to the website and/or his account if the Participant is believed or suspected to be in breach of any of the terms and conditions herein, without giving any notice or reason and without liability to the participant.

6.4 The Participant undertakes to indemnify and hold the LTA (including its agent) harmless from any loss, liability, claim or demand made by any third party due to or arising out of the Participant's breach of any of the terms and conditions herein.

6.5 The LTA reserves the right to publish statistical results from the Study. Statistical results DO NOT include a Participant’s personal data, such as contact details, individual travel history or commuting patterns. Statistical results refer to aggregates of individual data, for example, to answer questions such as: what fraction of peak commuters shifted their commuting times or what fraction of morning commuters shifted to an earlier commute time, etc. The LTA (including its agent) will not disclose Participant’s personal data.

6.6 The LTA (including its agent) shall to the full extent permitted under applicable law, not be liable in respect of any claim for any loss, damage, costs or expenses whatsoever (including, without limitation, any consequential, indirect, special, punitive or incidental damages) arising out of or in connection with the Study or any activity related thereto.

6.7 The LTA reserves the right to at any time vary or amend these terms and conditions and/or to suspend, discontinue or terminate the Study at any time at its absolute discretion without prior notice.

6.8 The terms and conditions herein shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with Singapore law and participants hereby agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Singapore courts.

6.9 There is currently no official application or mobile app for the Travel Smart Rewards programme. Participants who decide to use (including disclose any confidential personal information through) any third party application regardless of whether such application has the same or similar name as the Travel Smart Rewards programme, do so at their sole risk.

7. Limitation of Liability

7.1 The LTA (including its agent) shall not be held responsible or liable for lost, late, misdirected, illegible, or mutilated registration entries, or for theft, destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, transactions and records in the participant's account provided in this Study.

7.2 The LTA (including its agent) shall not be liable for any loss or damage caused to the participant by any breakdown, malfunction or outage of any website, software, computer system or equipment or data loss.

7.3 The LTA (including its agent) assumes no responsibility whatsoever for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, failures or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers, providers, computer equipment, software, or browsers, whether on account of technical problems, traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or on account of any combination of the foregoing.

7.4 While the LTA (including its agent) have made efforts in good faith to protect Participants’ information (see clause 8.5 below), Participants’ acknowledge that they participate in the Study at their own risk.

7.5 The LTA reserves its rights to terminate any Participant account, stop all payments and take any and all appropriate action (including legal action) against anyone who does not comply with the terms and conditions of this study, or attempts in any way to cheat or circumvent the objectives of the Study.

8. Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy governs the manner in which the Travel Smart Rewards website www.travelsmartrewards.sg ("Site") collects, uses, maintains and discloses information collected from persons ("Users" and each, a "User") who access the Site. This privacy policy applies to the Site and all products and services offered by the Site.

When you participate in the Study, you are agreeing to share a limited amount of your past and present commute history, such as the start and end time, distance, and station locations of your trips. The information is necessary to the workings of the scheme, such as awarding credits, and for analysis. However the analysis will not be linked in any way to personally identifiable information.

8.1 Personal identification information

We collect personal identification information from Users when they register on the Site. Users must provide a valid email address, their full name, CEPAS card number, age, gender and occupation. In addition, users may upload their photos and provide their bank account details to facilitate direct crediting of rewards.

Participation in the Study is voluntary. Users who do not wish to provide their personal identification information should not apply to participate in the Study.

If Users register for the Site using Facebook, we will collect and store their Facebook profile IDs together with their friend lists to allow users to interact with their Facebook friends on the Site.

8.2 Non-personal identification information

We may collect non-personal identification information about Users whenever they access the Site. Non-personal identification information may include the browser name, the type of computer and technical information about Users' means of connection to the Site, such as the operating system, the Internet service providers utilized and other similar information.

8.3 Web browser cookies

The Site may use "cookies" to enhance User experience. Users' web browsers place cookies on their hard drives for record-keeping purposes and sometimes to track information about them. Users may choose to set their web browser to refuse cookies, or to alert them when cookies are being sent. If they do so, some parts of the Site may not function properly.

8.4 How we use collected information

The Site collects and uses information collected from Users for the following purposes:

  • To collect commute information from LTA: We use Users' CEPAS card numbers to retrieve their commute information from the LTA, to confirm their eligibility to join the program and use the resources made available to qualified participants as part of the Travel Smart Rewards programme.
  • To improve Users' experience: We may use information in the aggregate to understand how our Users as a group use the services and resources provided on the Site.
  • To improve the site: We continually strive to improve the site offerings based on the information and feedback we receive from Users.
  • To improve customer service: Users' information helps us to more effectively respond to customer service requests and support needs.
  • To send periodic emails: The email address provided by Users will only be used to send them information and updates relating to their participation in the Study. It may also be used to respond to their inquiries, and/or other requests. Users will receive emails that may include project news and participation updates. If at any time users would like to unsubscribe from receiving future emails, they may do so by contacting us via the Site.

8.5 How we protect Users' information

We adopt appropriate data collection, storage and processing practices and security measures to protect against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure or destruction of Users' personal information, username, password, transaction information and data stored on our Site.

Sensitive and private data exchange between the Site and its Users happens over an SSL secured communication channel and is encrypted and protected with digital signatures.

8.6 Sharing personal information

We do not sell, trade, or rent users' personal identification information to others. We may share generic aggregated demographic information not linked to any personally identifiable information regarding visitors and users with our business partners and trusted affiliates and for the purpose of substantiating research reports.

8.7 Changes to this privacy policy

The LTA (including its agent) has the discretion to update this privacy policy at any time. We encourage Users to frequently check this page for any updates. Users’ acknowledge and agree that it is their personal responsibility to review this privacy policy periodically and keep themselves updated of any amendments.

9. User acceptance of these terms

By using this Site, the User signifies his or her acceptance of these Terms and Conditions (including the Privacy Policy). If the User does not agree to this policy, he or she must stop using the Site and also stop participating in the Study by sending an email to team@travelsmartrewards.sg. The User's continued use of the Site and/or continued participation in the Study, following the posting of any changes to these Terms and Conditions (including the Privacy Policy) will be deemed his or her acceptance of those changes.
